SASOL: The South African Deep Engineering Story
Some histories deserve to be remembered. Others deserve to be celebrated.
The history of Sasol is the history of South Africans looking at what appeared to be a permanent national limitation and answering it with courage, science and extraordinary human ingenuity.
South Africa possessed immense reserves of coal—but almost no crude oil. Instead of accepting that reality, a generation of scientists, engineers, miners, artisans and industrial pioneers dared to imagine the seemingly impossible: that this country could manufacture its own liquid fuel from the resources beneath its soil.
From that audacious idea arose Sasol.
What began as scientific experimentation became one of the greatest industrial achievements in South African history. Complex technologies were mastered. Mines were developed. Vast processing plants were constructed. New knowledge was created. And around this vision, two remarkable industrial towns—Sasolburg and Secunda—rose from the landscape.
Sasol became more than a company. It became a powerful expression of South African capability: proof that our country could think boldly, build at immense scale and compete at the frontiers of industrial science.
Its products helped move vehicles, sustain factories, support agriculture and supply countless materials used in everyday life. Its knowledge crossed borders. Its technologies travelled into the world. Generations of South African engineers, chemists, technicians, miners and workers became part of a national tradition of practical excellence.
This documentary invites us to rediscover that extraordinary inheritance.
We journey from the first investigations into coal-based fuel during the 1920s to the establishment of Sasol in 1950; from the difficult birth of Sasol One to the immense industrial achievement of Secunda; and from synthetic fuels to advanced chemicals, natural gas, international expansion and the emerging possibilities of green hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuel.
This is not simply the history of machines, mines and factories. It is the history of imagination disciplined by knowledge—and knowledge transformed into something real.
It reminds us that South Africa has never been merely a consumer of the world’s inventions. We have adapted technology, advanced it, built upon it and contributed our own expertise to global industry.
Today, Sasol faces the challenge of a new energy age. But the history that carried it this far remains a source of confidence. The same country that learned to transform coal into liquid fuel can apply its intelligence, experience and determination to the creation of cleaner forms of energy.
The past is not presented here as nostalgia. It is presented as evidence.
Evidence of what South Africans can accomplish.
Evidence that limitations can be confronted.
Evidence that great national achievements begin when people refuse to believe that the impossible must remain impossible.
Come with us as we enter the laboratories, descend into the mines, cross the pipelines and stand before the great industrial complexes that changed South Africa.
Discover the people, ideas and breakthroughs behind one of the country’s most extraordinary achievements.
Take pride in the ingenuity.
Take pride in the knowledge.
Take pride in the South African hands and minds that built it.
This is more than the history of a company.
This is a chapter in the history of South African greatness.
This is The History of Sasol.
